For those of us in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the Delaware Canal State Park is a local gem, spanning about 60 miles between Bristol and Easton. The canal was first built in the 1830s, and for about 100 years, it was primarily a means of transporting coal. Today, the park is a wonderful place for walking, fishing, running, bicycle riding, and watching animal life.
For landscape photographers, the canal and towpath offer endless possibilities. Over the years, I have photographed different sections of the park during each of the seasons, in a range of weather and lighting conditions, each offering a different king of beauty. I have photographed the the park with colorful fall foliage and spring flowers, as well as during winter snow storms. I've photographed foggy mornings when the path seemed to disappear, and mornings when the rising sun peeked through the trees at the side of the towpath.
The combination of water, trees, bridges, reflections, and the winding path offer a seemingly endless range of photographic possibilities. Often there are surprises, such a heron looking for breakfast, a hot air balloon, or a uniquely colored sky. What follows are some my photographs of the state park taken over the past seven years. They cover the section of the canal between Yardley in the south and Upper Black Eddy in the north, all within Bucks County. I have grouped them by season.
