New Orleans in Mardi Gras Season 2017: Photographs of the French Quarter

"Oh when the Saints go marching in
When the Saints go marching in
O Lord, I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in..."
(made famous by Louis Armstrong).

My family and I recently spent four days in New Orleans, at the beginning of the 2017 Mardi Gras season.  Much of our evening activity was centered around NBA All Star events, but we still had a great taste of New Orleans:  parades, jazz music, and wonderful cooking, all surrounded by the beautiful and historic architecture.  I had plenty of time (usually in the very early morning, before most of our crew was awake) to walk around and photograph the French Quarter, hours before it got bustling.

As you look through my French Quarter photographs, enjoy a cup of coffee (preferably a "cafe au lait" from Cafe Du Monde) and have it with some delicious beignets.  If you're ready for something more substantial, perhaps try a bowl of seafood gumbo, or crawfish étouffée, or some jambalaya. For dessert you might try bananas foster or bread pudding or key lime pie.  In any case, here are a few of my new photographs of the French Quarter.

This post is in memory of out wonderful dog, Roger, who died less than a week before our trip to New Orleans.  Roger's sweet, playful, and always friendly disposition brought joy to our family for eight years, and we greatly miss him.

2015 Year in Review: Josh Friedman's Photographs

As I review some of my photographs from the past 12 months, I can't help but notice the number of bridges, pathways and reflections.   Perhaps some part of me was drawn to these subjects, as this was a year of transitions within our family: our two wonderful sons are growing into young men and they are a continuing source of joy and pride, our older son (Alex) graduated high school and started college, and my 91-year-old father passed away this past July (my parents had been married 66 happy years).  In retrospect, the bridges connect us to our past and future, while the pathways and reflections are indicative of a period of introspection and appreciation.

All of the images below were taken in either Pennsylvania, New Jersey or New York.  The majority of them are within 45 minutes of our home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. From the thousands of photographs I have taken during the past 12 months  I have chosen 27 favorites (thanks to my wife Cynthia for her much appreciated help in narrowing down the field). I am curious which images other folks like best. These and many more of my photographs can be seen at my online ETSY shop.  As we cross the bridge into 2016, I wish you all a year filled with peace, fulfillment and happiness.

Autumn in Bucks County, Pennsylvania: Landscape and Nature Photography

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
Albert Camus

I love autumn in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.  For photographers, there is so much to offer:  rolling hills, rivers, lakes, state parks, and historic architecture, all enhanced by the warm colors of fall.

I recently led an "Autumn in Bucks County" photography workshop.  We covered topics like exposure, composition, post-processing and HDR (high dynamic range) photography.  We spent one full day - sunrise to after sunset - in the field, photographing many of my favorite Bucks County locations. About a week later I got together with many of the participants to share and critique our images. Its always interesting to see how different people focus on diverse things in the same setting.  The group members had taken some really beautiful and creative shots.

With the exception of the Cabin Run Covered Bridge photograph (from October, 2014), I took all of the images below between late September, 2015 and November 1st, 2015 (the day of the workshop, when I took about half of these photographs).  That day, we started with the sunrise in New Hope, followed by several locations in Upper Bucks County: in Pipersville, we visited the Tohickon Creek, the Cabin Run Covered Bridge and surrounding area, and the High Rocks Vista section of Ralph Stover State Park.  After lunch, we visited the Fonthill Castle (Doylestown), the Frankenfield Covered Bridge (Point Pleasant) and ended with sunset views of the Delaware River from the Lumberville Footbridge (Lumberville).  For those interested in exploring Bucks County and taking your own photos, I have indicated the locations under each image.
